Vote YES on Y to Renew Petaluma’s Urban Growth Boundary

Protecting Open Spaces, Supporting Urban Growth for the next generations
On November 5, Vote Yes on Measure Y to renew the City of Petaluma’s Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) that protects precious open spaces and farmlands, prevents sprawl development, and supports affordable housing.

Petaluma’s current voter-approved Urban Growth Boundary, approved in 2010, expires in 2025. On July 1st, 2024, the City Council unanimously decided to place the issue on the ballot and ask for voters’ approval to renew it without any changes for the next 25 years.

Now, it’s our turn to ensure these protections will remain in place for the next 25 years!

What's an Urban Growth Boundary (UGB)?

An Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) is simply a boundary around a city or town set by the voters to define the limits of urban development. It is an environmental, climate-smart measure intended to preserve open space, agricultural uses, and wildlife habitat. It is also needed to encourage climate-smart, city-centered growth to enhance climate resilience by limiting sprawl and making it easier to walk and bike to school, jobs, and shops.

An UGB separates urban areas from the surrounding natural and agricultural lands or greenbelts. It puts a limit on how far out the city can expand. UGBs are often voter-approved and set for a specified period of time, like 20 years.

Now it is time to reinforce voter protections for UGBs for the next generation.

We are optimistic that Petaluma voters will reinforce their commitment to this crucial land-use policy by voting Yes on Measure Y to renew the Petaluma UGB.
